This is a hands-on, physically demanding role, working outdoors in all weather conditions. You\u2019ll be part of a team installing, jointing, and repairing cables, responding to both planned works and emergency faults to ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p>During your Jointer training programme, you\u2019ll have the opportunity to build on your existing skills and experiences gained in other industries. The training offers a mix of technical, academic and on the job training which is provided by our dedicated training school. Our programme enables you to earn while you learn, whilst also gaining vital experience and skills as you study towards a nationally recognised qualification.<\/p>\n<p>The programme can take 18 to 24 months depending on your personal capabilities and is centred on an initial course at our training school followed by buddying with an experienced cable jointing team where you will build a portfolio of work which will allow you to gain authorisations to work on the network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you\u2019ll get<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fully funded training to become a qualified Cable Jointer (training typically lasts around 18-24 months)<\/li>\n<li>Structured salary progression linked to your skills development and authorisations<\/li>\n<li>All tools and PPE provided<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to earn additional income through overtime and standby<\/li>\n<li>Access to a flexible benefits package supporting your finances, wellbeing, and family life<\/li>\n<li>A company vehicle provided towards the end of the programme (typically around 3 months before Trade Test completion)<\/li>\n<li>Career stability and on-going progression opportunities<\/li>\n<li>A skills-based pay matrix so your salary increases as you develop your skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Before you apply \u2013 what to expect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a structured training programme where you\u2019ll gain a nationally recognised qualification while building practical, on-the-job experience.<\/p>\n<p>To succeed, you\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend all mandatory training \u2013 annual leave cannot be taken during the following dates:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jointing Course Part 1: 30\/11\/26 to 05\/02\/27<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jointing Course Part 2: 04\/05\/27 to 25\/06\/27<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have reliable daily access to your own transport throughout the trainee programme<\/li>\n<li>Be flexible and able to travel to Thatcham Training Centre and other regional locations (daily travel required; accommodation not provided for regional training). The role may involve overnight stays and emergency response work<\/li>\n<li>Commit to completing your training portfolio within 18\u201324 months<\/li>\n<li>Accept a training repayment clause if leaving within 3 years of qualification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What you\u2019ll be doing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparing cables and carrying out jointing and terminations<\/li>\n<li>Assisting on LV (415V\u20131000V) and HV (11kV\u201333kV) networks<\/li>\n<li>Supporting excavation, installation, and repair works and assisting with maintenance and refurbishment of substation equipment<\/li>\n<li>Working safely and promoting a strong safety-first culture<\/li>\n<li>Delivering excellent customer service during planned and emergency work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What you\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be customer-focussed with a natural ability to build relationships with customers, stakeholders and members of the public<\/li>\n<li>Hand skills \u2013 routinely stripping meter tails, using hand tools and fixing meters to boards.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll have a thirst for knowledge and training, and be able to pick up new skills quickly, working with others within a team to achieve common goals and adjusting your behaviour to reflect the diversity of our workforce and customer base.<\/li>\n<li>Have a strong focus on Health &amp; Safety and will adhere to our company motto \u201cif it&#8217;s not safe, we don&#8217;t do it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Proactive and flexible approach, effectively planning and using initiative to ensure the right equipment is in place, adapting to change, and consistently delivering high-quality work with strict adherence to Health &amp; Safety standards<br \/>\nA full UK driving licence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Find Out More \u2013 See the Role in Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Your Career Sorted: Life as a Jointer at SSEN<\/em>\u00a0(link required)<\/li>\n<li><em>Your Career Sorted: Journey into Cable Jointing at SSEN<\/em>\u00a0(link required)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About our Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sse.com\/about-us\/our-businesses\/ssen-distribution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSEN Distribution<\/a>, part of the wider SSE group, powers 3.9 million UK homes and businesses.
