Internship or Graduation: General Autonomous Shipping

As an intern or graduation student within the RD&I team at Damen Naval, you will tackle a specific research question or contribute to the development of a tool for advanced naval projects. Examples include selecting sensors for autonomous docking or developing a simulator for autonomy testing in ROS. Depending on your assignment, your work may involve MATLAB simulations, experiments in our full-mission bridge simulator, testing with model boats in a water basin, or trials on full-size vessels. You will work closely with one of our researchers, who will provide daily guidance and ensure your work aligns with Damen’s expectations.

Key Accountabilities

• Conduct focused research to answer a defined technical question or develop a tool supporting RD&I initiatives
• Perform simulations and/or experiments using MATLAB, Python, ROS, or other relevant platforms
• Collaborate with the team to integrate findings into broader naval projects, ensuring technical accuracy and applicability
• Contribute to testing activities on simulators, model boats, or full-size vessels as appropriate to the project
• Report progress, document results, and present recommendations to your supervisor and project team

Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate possesses several of the following skills and experiences:

• Enrollment in a BSc or MSc program in Engineering, with strong background in Control, Robotics, Machine Learning, Mechatronics, Embedded Software, or HMI Design
• Proficiency in simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, Python, etc.), robotics control frameworks (ROS), or low-level programming languages (C, C++)
• Experience with network interfacing (hardwired IOs, Ethernet, Modbus) and/or standardized communication protocols (NMEA, etc.)
• Good command of English, particularly in written communication
