The Principal Materials Specialist interprets internal or external business issues and recommends best practices. They will be tasked with solving complex material management-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance. The Principal Materials Specialist may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in the field of material management. As such, they must have in-depth expertise in material management and broad knowledge of the material management discipline within the supply chain function.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Oversee materials management specialists and support issue resolution
Assure the OS&D (Overages, Shortages & Damages) process is being followed
Ensure all Unifi prosses are being followed and perform audits
Liaise with Material Controllers to coordinate requestions, BOM (Bill of Materials), and material allocation to Construction/Fabrication or 3rd Party Subcontractors
Work assigned projects to establish the project’s process based on the Unifi processes
May be selectively asked to participate in projects to assess or develop new tools
May be identified as Key Super User for the Area
Understand and work with Materials Management systems (Smart Materials) and EDMS (iDocs)
Utilize problem-solving skills to resolve Materials Management related issues actively
Ensure familiarity with other non-Materials Management technologies that are used to support the project
Manage and Execute the Surplus Materials process
Work in the home office and travel to the field to provide Materials Management consistency
Liaise with the leadership of QHSES, Project & Field / Shop Engineers, Expeditors, and Logistics
Responsible for project set-up as it relates to Materials Management
Lead others in material management activities, including receiving, locating, picking, issuing, packing, and forecasting, to ensure timely delivery to Construction/ Fabrication
Review and support the Material Management Plan, revise as needed
Support and mentor others in the materials reporting, tracking, and reconciliation process and Surplus management
Responsible for the success of their work and others, if applicable
Identifies and supports surplus materials
Troubleshoot advanced problems in the Site Module of Smart Materials with a sound understanding of Engineering and Procurement Modules
Manage receiving/issuing checklists and ensure proper documentation is correctly maintained
Manage the Identification of OS&D (Overages, Shortages & Damages) during the receiving process and SLODs (Stolen, Lost, or Damaged) during the fabrication/ Construction phase
Lead or assist in the execution of Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) Material Management
Identify through investigation and communication significant improvement opportunities, suggest ways in which to release these opportunities, and deliver against them within the end-to-end Material Management Life Cycle
Challenge and support the Material Management Team to identify and deliver improvements
Set and monitor KPIs, and when necessary, put in place corrective action plans ensuring performance improves
Conduct internal audits with Material Management
Liaise within Supply Chain Management for the continuous evolvement of KPIs (performance, quality, delivery, cost, and communications)
Analyze forecasting/ soft allocation to discipline leads and the Project Management Team of needed material at each location necessary, including Fabrication and Construction
Set and monitor KPIs, and when necessary, put in place corrective action plans ensuring performance improves
Essential Qualifications and Education:
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Supply Chain Management (or a relevant discipline) or HSD/GED/IGCSE with 10 years of relevant experience
8-12 years of relevant experience
Extensive functional, business, industry, and leadership expertise
Strong functional knowledge of Material Management Systems such as Smart Materials
Have a thorough understanding of receiving, stock, and issuing process
Well-versed in inventory and materials management systems used to support the process
